The Thursday morning quake in Sumatra follows a series of powerful earthquakes that have hit the area this week. Thousands may have died as a result of the series of earthquakes in the area.
On Tuesday a 8.0 magnitude earthquake hit in the Samoa Islands that caused tidal waves resulting in hundreds of deaths.
On Wednesday a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit in the area known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire." Thousands are thought to have died in that earthquake.
The Thursday readings are not an aftershock from the earthquake on Wednesday.
At this time there are no reports on the damage or casualties that the Thursday earthquake has caused.
This is a breaking news story, updates will follow as details come in.
