Famous New York City landmark the Empire State Building will turn red and yellow on Wednesday to mark Communist China's 60th anniversary.
In the past, New York's Empire State Building has lit different colors on special occasions or in memory of passed influential people.
In 1998, the Empire State Building was lit to blue to mark classic crooner "Old Blue Eyes" Frank Sinatra's death. On St. Patrick's Day the famous building was lit green.
Last week the building was lit red to commemorate the 70th anniversary of "Wizard of Oz," according to MSN News.
On Wednesday, the iconic building will light red and yellow to celebrate the People's Republic of China's 60th anniversary, according to AFP. The Chinese Consul Peng Keyu and other officials will take part in the lighting ceremony.
This occasion is meeting with some controversy. The Village Voice reportsNew York papers offered headlines such as "Empire State Building, Drenched in Blood."
The Weekly Standard opines, "Hey, the Red Chinese only killed 50 or 60 million of their own people, why not celebrate that achievement with a special lighting scheme."
