Jonas Gustavsson's massive save late in the third period of tonight's Leafs, Red Wings game helped the Leafs secure a 2-1 victory over the Wings.
Wings forwards, Johan Ryno and Jan Mursak broke in alone on the Leafs goaltender, and after Ryno made a cross crease pass to Ryno Gustavsson slide across and made an incredible stop with the his right pad.
He wasn't tested much after that and the Leafs held on for the win. Gustavsson, who came into the game in the second period and made 15 saves on all 15 shots he faced.
The Wings got out to a first period lead when a Brad Stuart shot squeaked in past Vesa Toskala (who started the first period) for the only goal of the period.
But just minutes into the second period the Leafs answered back on the powerplay when defenseman Carl Gunnarsson took a pass from Tomas Kaberle and ripped one past Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood. Gunarsson's first goal of the preseason.
Toronto's youth continued to produce about half way through the third period when Viktor Stahlberg took a feed from Tyler Bozak and redirected it past goaltender Jimmy Howard.
The 2-1 victory was the Leafs second in two nights against Detroit and improves their preseason record to 6-2.
The Leafs are scheduled for one more preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday before beginning their regular season schedule against the Montreal Canadiens on October 1st.
A strong performance from Gustavsson tonight leaves Leaf fans with another interesting debate; who is the starting goalie for the 2009-2010 Toronto Maple Leafs?
