Julia Grovernburg is pregnant with a baby girl, and a second baby, a boy, was conceived almost three weeks later. The rare condition of conceiving while pregnant is called "superfetation."
MSNBC reports that Todd and Julia Grovenburg's obstetrician confirmed that the couple will have two babies after "an ultrasound revealed that a male fetus was conceived a full two-and-a-half weeks after the woman became pregnant with a baby girl."
NBC's Dr. Nancy Snyderman was quoted as saying, "The pregnancy may sound weird, but it is possible."
The Grovenburgs live in Ft. Smith, Ark. and sat down with reporter Jared Broyles, of KFSM-TV, to talk about the results of an ultrasound that Julia described as “shocking.”
Broyles notes that the couple did not seek fertility treatments even though “they had been trying to get pregnant for several years and were about ready to try adoption.”
Julia has named the babies Jillian and Hudson. Husband Todd admits “I like both of them [baby names], but they were both her [Jullia’s] suggestions."
Todd said to Broyles, "We may need to move. Get a bigger house." Broyles confirmed that, in order to accomodate their growing family, the couple are moving into a bigger house.
In a statement released on Sept. 18 to KFSM-TV, Julia’s obstetrician, Dr. Michel Muylaert, said that UAMS confirmed the suspicion of superfetation:
Mrs. Julia Grovenburg is pregnant with twins and there appears to be a discordant growth pattern, possibly due to superfetation. This is an unusual and rare condition, but the possibility is real. It can only be confirmed after delivery by chromosomal and metabolic studies on the babies. She was evaluated at UAMS in Little Rock for this condition and they confirmed the suspicion of superfetation.
In the video, the mom-to-be smiled and said, "It's fun I mean we feel blessed to have something so rare and as of this point they're perfectly healthy.'
In another ironic twist to the story, Broyles reports:
Hudson, the younger of the two, will likely be born first, whether naturally or by c-section, simply because of where he's situated in the womb. As if the story couldn't get any stranger, the babies' official due dates are in two different years: 2009 and 2010. Both are expected to be born together in December.
