Twelve people were confirmed dead while 15 others were severely injured when an unexpected explosion occurred in a coal mine in Poland, Friday.
According to officials, a methane leak caused the explosion in a 3,450 feet underground coal mine in the southwestern city of Ruda Slaska.
Edyta Tomaszewska, a spokeswoman for the government body that regulates mining told
Fox News that "some of the miners were killed immediately and others died later of burns."
Further investigations are still ongoing in order to assess the real cause and to identify those who are held liable and responsible for the said incident.
The coal mine's explosion was the deadliest mining incident since a methane blast killed 23 miners at the Halemba mine in November of 2006.
