One of the most vicious dinosaurs to ever roam the Earth, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, was threatening because of its size. In northeastern China, however, a smaller version of the ferocious predator was recently discovered.
Standing at about nine feet tall and weighing a modest 150 pounds, the dinosaur dubbed Raptorex Kriegsteini, has all the attributes of a T-Rex including a large head, tiny arms and lanky feet. Well, all except the gigantic physical features.
According to experts the Raptorex Kriegsteini roamed the Earth around 125 million years ago. It was conceived to be an earlier version of the T-Rex.
The fossilized remains of the dinosaur were discovered by hunters in northern China, smuggled out of the country and offered for sale to collector Henry Kriegstein. Kriegstein, to whom the dinosaur was named, donated the fossil to science.
"It really is the blueprint for the later (T. rex) dinosaurs," paleontologists Paul Sereno told the
Associated Press.
