article imageKimbo Slice's Road To Redemption Begins Tonight

By Dustin Pollack     Sep 16, 2009 in Sports
It was just under a year ago that the YouTube fighting sensation, Kimbo Slice lost to Seth Putruzelli by knockout, in a fight a part of CBS Saturday Night Fights. The match lasted 14 seconds.
Putruzelli was not even supposed to be Slice’s opponent in the match, but an eye injury to Ken Shamrock (his original opponent) forced Putruzelli to step in and fight Kimbo.
At that moment in time Slice was a fighter for the Elite XC, but just weeks after his loss to Putruzelli the company went bankrupt and Slice was left on the outside of the fighting world looking in.
Slice’s fighting career didn’t begin in the ring of the Elite XC; in fact his debut in Elite XC wasn’t until November 2007. His career began on the streets… literally. In 2003 he began fighting in unsanctioned street fights in which he brutally beat down his opponents. These fights were taped and circulated the Internet through YouTube.
When asked about Kimbo Slice, President of the UFC, (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Dana White stated that if Kimbo ever wanted to fight in the UFC he would have to go through the Ultimate Fighter television show and win it.
The Ultimate Fighter has been through nine seasons on national television and has seen fighters like Michael Bisping, Forest Griffin, Matt Serra and Rashad Evans become stars in the UFC, beginning with winning the Ultimate Fighter series.
Tonight is the premiere of The Ultimate Fighter season 10: Heavyweights and the list of 16 fighters include Kimbo Slice and four former NFL players and the former IFL (International Fight League) heavyweight champion.
The 16 fighters will be divided up into two teams, one coached by former Light Heavyweight champion and former Ultimate Fighter winner, Rashad Evans and the other will be coached former Light Heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
Is Slice’s addition to the show simply a ratings grab by UFC commissioner Dana White, or can Kimbo prove to the world that he is a true Ultimate Fighter?
Tune in tonight to find out.
