Facebook, the world's largest social network, recently added two new features to the already large feature set: Tagging and Facebook Lite. Very Twitter-like in functionality, it seems Facebook is upping it's fight with Twitter.
Recently, Facebook launched two new features for users to enjoy on the site. The first, Tagging, allows users to "tag" people in their posts and status updates by using the @ symbol, followed by the name of the person to be tagged. This feature is reminiscent of the similar Twitter feature, called 'Reply.' Unlike Twitter, however, when a status message is posted, it doesn't retain the @ symbol, making the post cleaner in appearance.
Facebook also launched
Facebook Lite, a version of the site designed for people with slower internet connections. It also has an appeal to others as well. The lack of much of the clutter on the main Facebook pages, as well as a much simplified interface, make it a more attractive and cleaner interface for socializing. It also lacks the chat feature (one of the cooler features of Facebook) and seems to do away with easy access to FAcebook applications. Of course, visiting the page doesn't automatically convert your Facebook to the new look with no hopes of changing back, as you can easily return to the current Facebook style by removing the "lite" from the URL and navigating to "facebook.com."
Facebook Lite is seen as a Twitter-like version of Facebook, only showing the latest updates in a feed that resembles the stream on one's Twitter page.
These new features make Facebook more robust, and more Twitter-like. However, only time will tell if these features are enough to save Facebook from the frenzy that is Twitter.
