It could be called a friendly blood feud between two men, that began many years ago, who over time have donated 40-gallons of blood each.
On Tuesday, 75-year-old Al Fischer of Massapequa, New York, drew blood for the 320th time, equaling his friendly rival, 83-year-old Maurice Wood, a retired railroad inspector from St. Louis, Missouri.
Fischer, a print shop manager, said he has been donating blood about every two months for 58 years.
He described his relationship with Wood as being “engaged in a friendly rivalry” and said they spoke to each other a few months ago.
Harvey Schaffler, executive director of Long Island Blood Services, said Fischer has helped almost 1,000 people.
