Legislative lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Thursday denounced South Carolina's Republican Congressman Joe Wilson for his outburst during President Barack Obama's speech on Wednesday shoutng 'You lie!'
A variety of different emotions were felt on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning; most were just stunned that it occurred. United States Vice-President Joe Biden said on ABC’s
Good Morning America said that he was embarrassed for the chamber, which is a Congress he loves, ‘It demeaned the institution.’
Congressman Joe Wilson’s shocking outburst came during Pres. Obama delivered his speech on health care saying that he wants to extend it to all Americans however, it would not mean illegal immigrants would be insured. Immediately afterwards, Wilson shouted, ‘You lie!’ According to
The Associated Press.
Wilson later apologized and issued a statement, ‘This evening I let my emotions get the best of me. While I disagree with the president's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility." He further added that he tried to telephone the President personally but spoke with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel instead.
There has been no confirmation if the President accepted the apology but, according to Biden, ‘knowing him, he probably accepted the apology.’
Former 2008 Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain told
CNNthat the Representative’s actions were ‘disrespectful.' Further added that there is 'no place for it in that setting or any other and he should apologize immediately.'
While some were appalled by his actions and was the main focus on political morning talk shows, Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said to reporters, when asked about the Congressman’s outrage, ‘It's time for us to talk about health care, not Mr. Wilson.’
According to the
Politico, Pelosi considered gaveling Wilson out of order on Wednesday night but decided against it.
Nevertheless, others benefitted from the outlandish scene. Wilson’s Democratic opponent immediately took upon this opportunity. Within eight hours after the incident, former-Marine Rob Miller received 3,000 donations to his Congressional campaign, which tallied to just under $100,000.
Wilson is now a mockery on the Internet. A new website was created called Joe
Wilson is your pre-existing condition, which was similar to 'Barack Obama is your new bicycle.' It has such lines as ‘Joe Wilson stole your newspaper,’ ‘Joe Wilson hit on your mom,’ and ‘Joe Wilson claims your sick child is faking.’ The website can be found
here.
On Thursday’s opening session prayer Reverend George L.W. Werner, dean emeritus of Trinity Cathedral in Pittsburgh, delivered this sermon, regarding the sudden eruption, ‘Gracious God, we meet in a challenging moment of your history. We cannot control all that may endanger us, but we can choose our behavior and the example we set as leaders.’
