A man in a Georgia Wal-Mart allegedly slapped a two-year-old in the face because she was crying. He was a stranger and did not know the mother and her child.
Roger Stephens, 61, was arrested for slapping a stranger's toddler. The incident took place at the Wal-Mart in Stone Mountain a suburb of Atlanta.
Stephens has been charged with first-degree cruelty to a child.
According to a police report as posted in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Sonya Mathews, the child's mother told police they were walking in the aisles of the Wal-Mart when Stephens approached her and said “if you don’t shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you.”
The report said a short time later when Matthews and her still crying child were in another aisle Stephens again approached them grabbed the toddler and slapped her across the face several times. Stephens then said to Mathews, “See, I told you I would shut her up."
As reported by WSB-TV Stephens was held by a bystander until security arrived.
When the police arrived Stephens said that he had slapped the little girl but he had apologized to Mathews, according to the report.
According to Cpl. David Schiralli the Gwinnett Police Department spokesman Stephens is being held without bond at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
The report states the 2-year-old endured "slight redness" to her face.
