Whoopi Goldberg sent a video expressing her support of Hungary’s 14th Gay Pride Parade on Saturday. Goldberg says she has been following the event, along with the opposition to it in the country, for years.
According to
Naplo-Online News, Goldberg said:
I believe that we are all different and even so we desire the same: freedom, respect, love and peace.
Goldberg said not everyone needed to agree with the event: "But every citizen of democratic Hungary should agree to firmly reject violence against each other. "
During the last two years, threats of violence were made and parade members were pelted with eggs and bags filled with feces.
Goldberg was joined in her call by 13 foreign embassies in Hungary, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, South Africa, the UK and the US, among others.
Meawhile, a survey by the Nézőpont Intézet (Viewpoint Institute) said 71 per cent of Hungarians agreed that gays and lesbians had a right to hold the Gay Dignity Procession on Saturday, I
ndex.hu reported.
Twenty percent of those surveyed agreed with the march, while 26 percent would ban it. Fifty-one percent disagreed with the holding of the march, but recognised the gay community’s right to hold it.
Police said the march would go ahead as planned.
Recently, another American entertainer,
Madonna, made a similar call to neighbouring Rumania, demanding that they treat the Gypsy minority more humanely.
