The wild card race in the American League is starting to widen. The Tampa Bay Rays fell six games behind the Boston Red Sox for the wild card
after losing 8-4.
Kevin Youkilis, J.D. Drew and Jason Bay all homered for the Red Sox at Tropicana Field. It was a rare win for Boston at that Stadium. The Rays have dominated the Red Sox on their home field in the last two years. The Red Sox have won 11 of their last 14 games. Tampa Bay fell six games behind Boston in the wild card race.
Jon Lester (11-7) gave up 2 runs, 7 hits and struck out 9 in six innings. Jonathan Papelbon pitched two innings and picked up his 33rd save of the season. Papelbon entered the eighth inning after the Rays scored two runs. With the bases loaded and none out Papelbon got a strike out, a foul out and a diving catch by center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to hold the lead for the Red Sox. He pitched a perfect ninth inning to end the game.
