article imageGmail Down in Massive Service Outage

Google's 'Gmail' web email service disappeared from the web earlier today in what seemed to be a massive and unexpected service failure.
Users trying to access the Gmail web email service found the webpage unavailable. The Register reports that the outage affected users on both the West and East coasts of the United States along with those from the United Kingdom.
The Official Gmail Blog alludes to a pretty serious problem:
Because this is impacting so many of you, we wanted to let you know we're currently looking into the issue and hope to have more info to share here shortly
Users continued to be able to access their emails by using the IMAP or POP protocols providing that they had previously activated these services on their email accounts.
Work to resolve the fault began to bring users back online from around 22:30 BST onwards. As of this moment the Google Apps Status Dashboard still shows faults but Twitter users are reporting that service is restored.
In an update to the Official Gmail Blog David Besbris made the following statement:
We've fixed the issue, and Gmail should be back up and running as usual. We're still investigating the root cause of this outage, and we'll share more information soon. Thanks for bearing with us.
