article imagePoll: Just 4% of Israelis view President Obama as Pro-Israel

By Patrick McMahon     Aug 29, 2009 in Politics
According to a poll conducted for the Jerusalem Post, just 4% of Israelis view President Obama as Pro-Israel, while 51% of them view Obama as Pro-Palestinian.
This marks a sharp decline in popularity for President Obama since a May poll showed 31% of Israelis viewed him as Pro-Israel and only 14% viewed him as Pro-Palestinian. That poll was taken before Obama's widely followed speech in Cairo, Egypt on the importance of relations with the Muslim world.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Obama in Washington in late May in order to improve relations between the two countries and to discuss a wide array of mutual interests. The same poll showed that 88% of Israelis thought former President George W. Bush was Pro-Israel and just 2% thought he was Pro-Palestinian.
The relationship between the United States and Israel has long been a close one, with Israel viewing America as their closest ally. In recent months, with both President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu representing two different political ideologies, that relationship has frosted slightly.
