Earlier today, the funeral for the late Senator Ted Kennedy was held in Boston, where leaders from across the country gathered to pay their respects to the last Kennedy brother.
President Obama delivered the eulogy for Kennedy, where he called him "the greatest legislator of our time." Obama went on to pay tribute to Kennedy's record as a public servant and also as the patriarch of America's most well known political dynasty. Earlier in the morning, before the funeral began, Obama sought out Kennedy's widow, Vicki, for a private meeting.
The service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica drew a large crowd, both inside and outside of the church. Besides President and Mrs. Obama, the audience read like a list of who's who in American politics. Former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Jimmy Carter were there, along with their wives. Vice President Joe Biden was also in attendance, as well as former Vice Presidents Al Gore and Dan Quayle. Many of Kennedy's colleagues in the Senate were there including John McCain, Christopher Dodd, John Kerry, Barbara Boxer, and Orrin Hatch. Vicki Kennedy went up to President Obama and each of the former presidents and first ladies to accept condolences from them.
Both of Ted Kennedy's sons, Ted Kennedy Jr. and Patrick, gave emotional speeches about their father, each of them receiving a standing ovation. The rest of the Kennedy clan was also in attendance including Joan, the late senator's first wife; Maria Shriver, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ethel Kennedy, and Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, the daughter of former President John F. Kennedy. Vicki Kennedy was seated with the late senator's children and step children, and with his sister Jean, 81. Jean Kennedy Smith, the former Ambassador to Ireland, is the last surviving member of Joe and Rose Kennedy's nine children.
Senator Kennedy's body will be flown to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, where he will be buried just feet from his brothers Robert Kennedy and John Kennedy. Kennedy, 77, passed away on Tuesday after losing his battle with brain cancer.
