article imageDeer Plays Dead to Escape Cheetah and Hyena

By Kevin Jess     Aug 28, 2009 in Environment
A nature video that is fast becoming an online hit shows a deer playing dead while being attacked by a cheetah and a hyena.
The video begins with a cheetah biting and chewing on a fallen deer's leg but is soon interrupted by a hyena.
The deer offers no resistance to either of the two predators.
The cheetah appears threatened by the hyena and retreats a few feet away to let the hyena feed on the deer. The hyena appears to bite the deer's belly section for a moment and then tries to get the cheetah to move farther away, assured that the deer wasn't going anywhere.
The deer which appears dead and stiff suddenly gets up and runs away as the hyena re-approaches it.
The deer obviously faked being dead in order to save itself.
How the deer fares later and where the footage was taken is unknown but since it was uploaded to LiveLeak, a video sharing website, yesterday, it has received almost 19,000 views.
According to the Telegraph, last year a hunter in the US state of Missouri was shocked to come under attack from a large deer that he was convinced he had just shot dead. Randy Goodman, 49, described the deer's back-from-the-dead assault as "15 seconds of hell", but eventually managed to kill it with two more shots.
