article imageNew found planet might be nearing its demise

By John Louie S. Ramos     Aug 26, 2009 in Science
A newly discovered exoplanet which orbits its star in less than one earth day, may have been found just in the nick of time, readily available for further studies before its expected destruction.
The planet, WASP-18b (Wide Angle Search for Planets) one of the few "Hot Jupiter" class of planets -- defined as a extrasolar planet which closely resembles or even exceeds the mass of planet Jupiter and orbits its parent star at approximately 0.05 AU -- is about one-eight of the distance between the Solar System's sun and the planet Mercury.
According the astrophysicists given the planet's hefty mass and strong gravitational pull from it parent star, the trend suggests that WASP-18b is moving towards its host star.
Astronomers are now looking at the possibility of conducting further studies, observing the planet from afar before its inevitable demise.
