Dennis Raymond McCarthy was on probation after being released from jail last week. He had served 10 months in the Oakland County Jail for molesting his then 4-year-old grandson.
Registered sex offender Dennis Raymond McCarthy a former substitute teacher pleaded guilty last year to second-degree criminal conduct admitting he had molested his then 4-year-old grandson.
Around 4 a.m. Sunday morning Debra McCarthy heard a noise downstairs in her home. She went to investigate and saw a man who had entered through an unlocked doorwall at the back of the house. She screamed at the man to get out of the house which brought her husband Dennis running downstairs.
According to State Police Detective Gary Muir as reported in detnews.com, "Instead of retreating from the house, the man went towards him (McCarthy). His wife said he said something to the intruder like, 'What are you doing? What do you want? Who are you?' "
The intruder and McCarthy struggled for a short time then the suspect ran out of the same door from which he had entered the house. McCarthy had been stabbed and collapsed. His wife called 911 and did what she could until help arrived. He was taken to Genesys Regional Medical Center where he died.
Mrs. McCarthy was unharmed. According to Trooper Nathan Ellis, "Intruder came in, walked past her and walked right over to the victim, Dennis McCarthy, and stabbed him in the neck."
As reported in freep.com Muir said, "At this point, we do not believe this crime is a random act of violence." The suspect had made a comment about McCarthy being a registered sex offender.
McCarthy's attorney said, "In 2004 McCarthy had been acquitted on charges that he had sexually assaulted a granddaughter, two of her cousins on her mother’s side of the family and two neighbor girls."
In that case McCarthy's daughter-in-law had testified on his behalf.
This is the same woman who went to the police last year to report some incidents her son had told her about with his grandfather.
The parents of the boy, McCarthy's son and daughter-in-law, have sued him in Oakland County Circuit Court. According to their attorney the suit is for damages on allegations of assault and battery, as well as neglect and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
The killer is described as a white man in his 20s, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 with a stocky build and brown hair, wearing a dark blue hooded shirt.
