The West Ham United defender Calum Davenport and his mother were the victims of a knife attack on Friday night at their home in Bedford, UK.
ITN News reports that the twenty-six year old footballer has undergone surgery and doctors describe his injuries as "serious".
Davenport's mother is recovering after they were both stabbed at home late on Friday evening.
After the attack police have arrested a twenty-five year old man in Derby on suspicion of attempted murder and a nineteen year old man, arrested earlier, remains in custody at a local police station, according to a police spokeswomen.
West Ham United released the following statement: "The club's medical team are in contact with hospital staff."
"Due to the ongoing police investigation, no further information will be released at this time."
"The thoughts of everyone at West Ham are with Calum and his family."
Calum Davenport was born in Bedford and has eight caps playing for the England Under 21 team. He started his career at Coventry, played for Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Southampton, Norwich City, Watford and last season played for Sunderland while on loan.
Recent rumours suggest that he is planning a move to Nottingham Forest who play in the Championship.
