The main spokesman of the Pakistan Taliban, Maulvi Omar, has been captured. Omar, who was also a senior aide to Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud, has confirmed the death of his leader.
Omar had gone into hiding after the Pakistani military stepped up its operations against the Taliban in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) the Christian Science Monitor reported.
Omar was captured on Monday in Mohmand Agency, on his way to a meeting of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or Pakistani Taliban. After his arrest, Omar confirmed that Baitullah Mehsud, leader of the TTP, had indeed been killed on August 5.
The report added that Omar had been arrested with the help of local militias, called “lashkars.” The arrest was seen as another success for the Pakistani military, which has been mauling the Taliban in the country, first in the northern Swat region and now in the mountainous FATA region, which forms part of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reported Mian Iftikhar Hussain, information minister for the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) of which FATA is a part, said:
We will catch them all. All Taliban will have to face the same fate.
The newspaper added that Omar’s capture came a day after the arrest of another Taliban commander, Qair Saifullah, at a private hospital in the capital, Islamabad.
