It has been alleged that protestors who demonstrated against the Iranian regime who had been incarcerated have been tortured to death.
This report appeared on the website of the former presidential candidate Mehdi Karoubi. A few days earlier, Karoubi had stated that imprisoned men and women had been raped.
‘Some young people have been battered to death only because they uttered slogans during the protests,’ writes Karoubi. He calls for an independent commission to study the evidence for the allegations, which he claims to possess.
Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami rejected the accusations during Friday prayers in the grand mosque in Tehran. Khatami called for Karoubi to be prosecuted for libel.
He told his flock that Khatami talks in a negative way about the Islamic system and that this supports Iran’s enemies, the United States and Israel.
The authorities refute the allegations that prisoners were raped, but admits that the protestors have been abused.
Government sources say that 4.000 people were arrested during the protests but that 3.700 have since been released.
