A enormous statue of Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union, collapsed on top of a man and killed him in Uvarovichi early on Monday morning.
According to Belarussian officials, the 16-foot high statue fell on top of a 21-year-old man after he climbed on top of it.
The man apparently was intoxicated when making the decision to climb the Soviet-era statue. When he reached the top, the statue broke into pieces and killed the man. The statue was made out of plaster and was erected in 1939 in the town of Uvarovichi, located in the southeastern part of the country.
Belarus has several monuments to the old Soviet Union still because their president, Alexander Lukashenko, is an admirer of the former superpower. Authorities have not released more information as to the identity of the deceased man.
