article imageSearch for Madeleine McCann moves to Australia

By Roderick Eime     Aug 6, 2009 in Crime
A new twist in the Madeleine McCann case has investigators coming to Australia in search of a mystery woman apparently with crucial information.
Following a "suspicious incident" in Barcelona during the early hours of May 2007, a new witness has come forward with information about a woman, possibly Australian, who was seen acting in an agitated manner. The incident occurred just over 72 hours after the then four-year-old Madeleine "Maddie" McCann's well-documented abduction.
A 41-year-old British male was attending a party near the busy marina in that city. At around 2am the witness noticed a well-dressed, but "agitated" woman and approached her. There was a brief conversation.
Investigators are not answering any questions about the content of this "potentially significant" discussion for "strict operational and security reasons."
The witness describes the woman as white, aged 30 to 35, with a slim build, 5'2" and perhaps a UK size 10. The witness said she was "A bit of a Victoria Beckham lookalike" and is thought to speak Spanish and also English with an Australian accent.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) have not been asked for assistance at this point.
