KHARTOUM The case against the Sudanese journalist Lubna Hussein has been postponed. Hussein was arrested on 3 July because she wore a pair of trousers in public.
The wearing of trousers by women is deemed not virtuous in Sudan which is a strict Islamic country. Breaking the rule can mean corporal punishment.
At the time of her arrest, Hussein was working for the media department of the UN mission in Sudan and as such should have had immunity. But last week Hussein said –whilst wearing trousers- that she had tendered her resignation.
She wants the case to go to [url=http://www.freemedia.at/index.php?id=288&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=4491&cHash=9035afa3b2 t=_blank]court in order to raise awareness about the clothing laws. Hussein risks receiving forty lashes of the whip as punishment.
Khartoum police used tear gas against tens of supporters of Hussein show had gathered in front of the court buildings on Tuesday. Among them were women who were wearing trousers.
