Aug 4, 2009 - Bill Clinton Visits North Korea - 1 comment
Former United States President Bill Clinton went to North Korea to negotiate the release of two U.S. journalists who are imprisoned in the country.
According to Yonhap News, former President Bill Clinton went to the communist nation to discuss the release of the two journalists, Euna Lee and Laura Ling, who are detained and sentenced to prison for twelve years. The two ladies were arrested for an illegal border crossing from China.
Two U.S. officials have denied any reports, however. U.S. Embassy spokesperson in Seoul, Aaron Tarver, said that he had not heard any news. Andy Lainey, spokesperson for the State Department also said, “I have no information on those reports.”
Sentencing of the two journalists has coincided with increased tensions between North Korea and Washington. Due to North Korea testing a nuclear weapon, the United Nations provided new sanctions against the nation.
Mr. Clinton said in a state department briefing, “The two journalists and their families have expressed great remorse for this incident, and I think everyone is very sorry that it happened.”
