By Christopher Szabo     Aug 1, 2009 in World
A guard outside former South African president Nelson Mandela’s home in Johannesburg has shot himself. A police spokesman says no one knows why the policeman committed suicide.
Captain Dennis Adriao of the South African Police Services (SAPS) said the police sergeant, whose name could not be released until his next of kin were informed, was part of the VIP protection department, according to Independent Online.
Adriao said the sergeant shot himself in the guardhouse just outside Mandela’s home in the upper class suburb of Houghton. He said:
The guard house is not part of the perimeter surrounding the former president’s house, but is one of the first lines of security upon entrance. We don't know on which part of the body he shot himself.
Adriao spoke of the reaction of the other guards:
They are in shock, we do not know why he did this, he never gave any indication.
Reports said the 37-year-old policeman committed suicide in front of his colleagues.
