Thousands of protesters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia were subject to tear gas and water cannons as the police tried to stop a rally protesting the Internal Security Act.
On Saturday in Kuala Lumpur 5,000 defied the authorities marching in the largest Malaysian city. They are protesting a law that would allow for citizens to be detained without a trial.
On Friday the leader of the PAS, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang raged against the police. His supporters also clashed with the authorities at the Sogo complex.
DAP Socialist Youth chief Anthony Loke was among the 157 who were arrested during the rally.
Police detained protesters that were in possession of anti-ISA material as the leader of the pro-ISA faction was barred from showing his side to the media at the Central Market area.
The Malaysian Insider reports:
“If they violate the law, stern action will be taken against them, no matter if they are pro-ISA or contra-ISA,” Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein warned.
“I will not compromise on this until the security and interests of the country are assured.”
