Holland’s Citadel represents the world’s first floating apartment complex. It seems to make a lot of sense as Holland is mostly under sea level, but what problems does it bring?
According to
news sources, flooding is a constant problem in Holland where most of the land area is under sea level, The Citadel Apartment Complex solves the problem because it floats. Fighting the rising tide is an impossible task so why not ride along with it? The only question is: Does it create more problems because it does float?
For centuries, building dikes and pumping water has not eradicated the flooding problem so now it becomes as things do when life gives you lemons and you are smart enough to make lemonade, “New Water.” Designed by Koen Olthius of Waterstudio in the Netherlands, this “water-breaking” new project via the utilization of modern water-cooling techniques will utilize 25% less energy than a conventional building on land.
Conceptualizing the old adage “if you can’t beat em, join em,” this is truly a brilliant idea. A floating road to the mainland and many boats serve the more than 60 apartment units. Some issues still need to be ironed out or at least considered.
For example, where does one walk one’s dog? Also can an apartment complex free float and be happy?
