Inside the Veracruz, Mexican home of municipal police commander Jesus Antonio Romero laid the bodies of five who had nothing to do with the legal system nor the drug trade. Romero's wife and four children were slain along side him in a pre-dawn attack.
It is not known who the gunmen were that murdered the family of six under the guise of darkness but the crime has all the markings of Mexico's drug cartels.
The
family never had a chance, their wood paneled home went up in flames when assailants flung grenades into it after bullets littered the scene. It isn't clear if bullets or flames doused out the lives of the six inside the home. The youngest was a mere six-years-old.
Romero, 39, had been the deputy operations coordinator for just a month in the Veracruz- Boca del Rio area. The area is known for violence and being a stronghold of the Zetas. The Zetas are a group of hit men that side with the Gulf cartel.
CBS reports:
"A family was sleeping peacefully when this assault occurred," Lopez said. "The house had wood paneling, and that's why the fire spread quickly and kept the young people from escaping."
The Romero family joins the sad fate with more than 11,000 Mexicans whose lives were cut short by the Mexican drug war.
