Before the election and since, people have questioned the authenticity of Barack Obama's birth certificate. These are called “birthers,” and their concerns have once again been refuted by Hawaii officials, showing the birth certificate as genuine.
Barack Obama was born at Kapiolani Hospital in Honolulu in the Punahou – Makiki District where his mother and grandparents lived and where he eventually attended school. Despite the evidence from both the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and declarations from state officials, there have been those questioning the authenticity of Obama’s birth certificate. Today Hawaii once again refutes birth arguments as foolish and unfounded.
There have been lawsuits and remarks made by conservatives like Rush Limbaugh and pundits like Lou Dobbs in spite of evidence that has consistently been validated by Fact Check, the Republican Governor of the State of Hawaii and both newspapers of Hawaii. The birth certificate was printed in both papers for the entire nation to see. Still it is questioned. One might wonder why, given the fact The American Spectator and John McCain both examined the issue and declared the legitimacy of Obama’s birth sufficiently not to promote it as a mechanism of argument.
Members of the right even question those who continue to promote the issue that Obama’s birth certificate is not legitimate. One of them maintains there are three good reasons to stop this argument. These include the fact conservatives are wasting valuable time over a non issue. The author also maintains the proof is sufficient, from state authorities, from Fact Check and from credible other sources, so it’s a waste of time arguing about it. The conservative writer concludes, “this evidence is as definitive as it gets. Obama has a legitimate birth certificate on file, he released a copy of it to the public, and there is a news clipping that confirms he was born in Hawaii in 1961.”
But why do people continue to pronounce falsehoods. Right Wing news declares it’s an opportunity to get traffic and attention. Furthermore a truism, one writer underlines as unfortunate and researchers found is true prevails. Studies have found that we are apt to believe myths and stories if those are things we are told before we are told the truth. It also turns out that it’s hard for people to believe the truth later on because these myths and stories linger on in spite of evidence to the contrary. Indeed this seems to be a pattern sufficient to have been quoted by both Lincoln and Goebbels, each in a different way. Hermann Goebbels, the famous German philosopher and proponent of Hitler, said:
If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it
Which likely means this article, articles now on the Internet and those in numbers of papers today, together with Hawaiian officials and others may never be believed because as researchers have found, the lie brings traffic and attention, as one author declares, and because of the dictum underlined by Goebbels and found to be true in research.
