A homeless man crawled into a dumpster on Sunday night to get out of the rain. He fell asleep and Monday morning he woke up while being dumped into a garbage truck.
ST. PETERSBURG FL.--It was raining Sunday so 52-year-old Kevin Hallaran, a homeless man, took refuge inside a dumpster and fell asleep.
After Antwain Scott a city sanitation worker, dumped the contents of the trash bin into his truck he noticed something that looked odd while checking out the monitor in the cab of his truck. The monitor shows a live feed from the hopper.
Inside the hopper were piles of garbage which included Chinese food from the previous day. The garbage was moving around and when Scott took a closer look he realized there was somebody inside the hopper.
Antwain Scott a 12-year employee of the St. Petersburg Sanitation Department said, "I just happened to see him back there, just waving and what not. I was like, stunned."
Until firefighters arrived Casisus Randolph was trying to keep Hallaran calm. Randolph who has worked for the city for seven years said, "I was trying to keep him calm because he was kind of hysterical trying to climb out of there, it's kind of deep."
Randolph added, "You have to imagine he had all kinds of shrimp and debris on him."
St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue came with ladders and were able to get Hallarian out of the truck. Halleran was taken to Ed White Hospital in St. Petersburg with minor injuries where he was treated and released.
Randolph said, "Lucky for him the truck was fairly empty. If the truck had been half-way full, the pressure from the hydraulic system would have crushed him."
