article imageNegative spiritual mindset affects breast cancer treatment

By John Louie S. Ramos     Jul 26, 2009 in Health
In a recent study conducted among breast cancer patients in western Pennsylvania.
Researchers found out that a negative spiritual/religious outlook can worsen emotional and mental health of patients.
The study that includes 198 women diagnosed with early-stage of breast cancer and 86 with late-stage cancer, revealed that those who were disillusioned with their faith and religion were more likely to experience depression and other kinds of mental illness.
On the other hand, those who had a positive spiritual outlook did not show any significant improvements with their mental and emotional health.
Dr. Randy Hebert, medical director of Forbes Hospice, part of the West Penn Allegheny Health System and author of the study said in a press conference that "the religious or spiritual beliefs may be extremely beneficial, particularly when anger and disillusionment with one's faith is present."
