article imageSmall Wonders: Guide Dog, Bonnie For Blind Collie, Clyde

By M Dee Dubroff     Jul 26, 2009 in Lifestyle
Bonnie and Clyde live again in this touching story of two stray dogs that found a purpose in each other without bullets, bank robberies and getaway cars. Read on for more about these two very special Border Collies.
Clyde is a very special Border Collie and according to news sources, he has the distinction of being the only dog on record to have his very own guide dog. He is totally blind and relies on fellow collie, Bonnie, to guide him everywhere, which she does happily. She is always just inches from his side guiding him on walks to food or to water. She even serves as a pillow when the dear boy gets disoriented and needs to rest his head on her haunches.
Both dogs were rescued as strays a mere three weeks ago, and now they are inseparable. Five-year old Clyde functions as a fully sighted dog with Bonnie’s help, but he won’t make a move without her.
In the words of Cherie Cootes from the London-based Meadow Green Dog Rescue Center:
"Clyde would be lost without Bonnie... If Clyde's unsure where he is he will suddenly go behind her and put his face on her back so she can guide him where he is going. He totally relies on her... When she walks, she tends to stop and make sure he's there…She looks out for him. There's absolutely no option of homing them separately. They have to go as a pair.”
"Politics may make strange bedfellows as the old saying goes, but dog rescue shelters make amazing and lasting friends!
