It's not people going crazy! The run is annual, taking place in New York City's Central Park. This year, the goal is to set a world record for the most people together in their undies. Organizers hope to beat the latest record, set just last month.
This year's event will be graced by New York's 'Naked Cowboy', Robert John Burck, who recently threw his hat into the mayoral race. Organizers hope to have at least 500 people turn out for this year's run. Thongs are not allowed.
The world record for the 'largest group of people wearing underwear' was set by a group calling itself "Cosmo" in the U.K. The group was made up of 146 men, who gathered to raise money for the "Everyman Campaign," which raises funds and awareness about testicular and prostrate cancer.
New York's underwear run is held every year just ahead of the New York Nautica Triathlon, which takes off this coming Sunday. The underwear run is the fun part of the Triathlon. This year's underwear run has a theme, and the person with the best "costume" will win a trip for two to Jamaica! Registration in the run is required.
The run starts at 7:30 pm this evening in New York's Central Park (Dead Road).
The Naked Cowboy's campaign platform is "doing more with less." A busker by day, Burck actually holds a degree in political science, according to Wikipedia.
July 26, 2009 Update: Nautica New York City Triathlon claimed that the Underwear Run was a huge success, with a new world record set, after 300 people registered. The record is yet to be confirmed, but congratulations to all participants!
