A mass pile-up in north Germany has led to 66 people being injured. In total 259 cars were involved in the incident which occurred late on Sunday evening.
It's been
reported that ten people are in hospital and have life threatening injuries. There were a number of crashes which happened on the motorway between Hanover and Peine.
Police say they think the accident was caused by a mix of bad weather and some cars going at excessive speed.
Rescue workers worked all night long to clear the motorway of the crashed cars and treating those caught up in the accident.
Klaus Wulfes, a firefighter, said: "I have not seen anything like this before. I have seen many accidents but never a pile-up this size."
One of the motorists explained how a car had ploughed in to his vehicle from behind and pushed them in to a nearby ditch.
Speaking to the Reuters news agency he said:
"All I did was turn around to check on my little son, our son. That was my only
thought,"
