article imageNonito Donaire: Challenging And Being The Best

By Edwin Ladaga     Jul 17, 2009 in Sports
Nonito Donaire talks about challenging himself and being the best. The IBF flyweight champion also singles out a fighter whom he likes to fight in the future.
Donaire is aware that to be the best, you will have to fight the best. When Nonito scored a devastating knockout victory over Darchinyan, he made it known to the boxing world that he'd like to be a unified champion in the flyweight division. He's been calling out the titleholders from Japan. None of them were interested in fighting the Filipino Flash.
What Nonito needs is boxing rivalry. He needs a fighter that brings out the best in him. Ali had Frazier. Israel Vasquez had Rafael Marquez. Pacquiao had Barrera, Morales, Marquez and the list keeps getting longer. Nonito has none. Nobody has really tested and taken Donaire to the limits of his boxing ability.
In an interview with Hardcore Sports Radio, the IBF flyweight champion also shared his thoughts on what motivates him to be a better boxer.
"It is part of my goal to be a champion at different weight classes. I'd like to see how far can I go up in weight- 115, 118, and 122 pounds. It is what drives me. If I stay in 112 lbs, I could be champion at 112 for many many years" answered Nonito, who clearly stated that being a multi-division champion motivates him a lot. On August 15, Nonito takes a step closer in obtaining a belt from another weight class by fighting Rafael Conception for an interim title fight.
Hardcore Sports Radio asked Nonito who among the fighters now that he would like to lace gloves with. He immediately pointed out Montiel.
"I want to fight Montiel. This is the guy I want to be fighting. He is a great fighter and champion, He is the best in the division." said the articulate Filipino American boxer. Nonito was supposed to fight Montiel in the Philippines but the Mexican boxer pulled out due to weight problems.
Fernando Montiel is now campaigning in the 118 pound category where King Kong Agbeko, Penalosa and even Jorge Arce fights. If he wants to fight the Mexican champion, then he should move up in weight once he has a 115 pound title belt. Perhaps Donaire's true boxing test will not come in the flyweight nor the superfly weight division. If he wants a challenge and an opponent that will define his career, then the loaded bantamweight is the place to go.
