In an official press release issued by the Queen’s press secretary, it was confirmed today that former Prime Minister Jean Chretien was appointed for the Order of Merit.
According to the press release, the
Order of Merit, which was founded by King Edward VII, is given to “
individuals of exceptional distinction in the arts, learning, sciences and other areas such as public service”. The award is limited to only 24 members in addition to foreign candidates. Very few candidates are considered from other nations.
The Queen has appointed Prime Minister Jean Chretien the Order of Merit. This will include the former PM in the ranks of people such as Albert Schweitzer, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and Gen. [Dwight D.] Eisenhower.
The official presentation of the award is likely to take place several months from now.
