Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said today that the House will not take up a resolution meant to honor the late Michael Jackson.
The California Democrat, during her weekly press conference, noted that Jackson was "a great, great performer," but said it was not necessary to schedule a vote to pass a resolution. She stated that individual members could honor the late King of Pop on the House floor if they so choose.
The House resolution was brought up by Texas Democratic Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee, who spoke publicly at Michael Jackson's memorial service on Tuesday. The wording of the proposed resolution stated: "Whereas Michael Jackson was not only an accomplished recording and performing artist, he was a noted humanitarian."
Controversy has surrounded the media's extensive coverage of Jackson's death, with another member of Congress publicly blasting the late performer. New York Congressman Peter King (R) stated Monday that Michael Jackson was a "pervert," "pedophile," and "a child molester."
