Roddick got 78 percent of his first serves in in the first set, banging shots into the Swiss’s body to make returns difficult. It was just the second time Federer lost a set in the tournament.
The second set started the same way as the first, with the players holding their serves. The set went into a tie break. Five-time champion Roger Federer overcame four set points to win the second set of the Wimbledon final against American Andy Roddick to tie the match.
Federer wins the third set tie-break 7-5 and leads two set to one. Despite saving two set points at 6-3 on his own serve, Roddick is helpless as Federer serves big, then dispatches the return at the net. Roger displayed perfect serve and great volley.
The American recovered from a heartbreaking second and third set loss to win the fourth set 6-3 and levelled the score at 2-2.
Roger and Andy fought through an epic and grueling fifth set. In the end, Roger's focus and determination prevailed and won it 16-14.
Federer broke Pete Sampra's previous record of 14th grand slam title. Pete Sampras was all praises for Roger, who he thinks is a great player and a great mover.
"Roger is a great champion. He deserves to win the title.
Sorry, Pete. I tried really hard". said Andy Roddick, who was gracious in defeat.
