Senator John McCain (R-AZ), former 2008 GOP presidential nominee, released a statement to the press supporting Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's decision to resign her office.
"I have the greatest respect and affection for Sarah, Todd, and their family. I was deeply honored to have her as my running mate and believe she will continue to play an important leadership role in the Republican party and our nation."
Palin, nominated to be McCain's running mate last year, revealed yesterday her plans to step down at the end of the month. McCain's words offer the governor support on her decision, even though he does not always appear to be supportive of her future. Earlier this year, he left her off a list of rising Republican stars and refused to commit to her, if she runs for the White House.
While McCain remains publicly supportive of the Alaska governor, Alaska's Republican Senator is not. Senator Lisa Murkowski issued a statement as well, saying “I am deeply disappointed that the Governor has decided to abandon the State and her constituents before her term has concluded.”
Murkowski and Palin remain political foes, since Palin defeated Murkowski's father in the 2006 GOP Primary for Governor.
