article imageRumour: Sony possibly making a Playstation Phone?

By David Goldsmith     Jun 29, 2009 in Technology
Another flurry of rumours has launched suggesting that Sony might be using its mobile phone and gaming skills to launch an iPhone competitor.
The rumour has been floating around on the Web recently: Sony could develop a PlayStation Portable (PSP) version with an integrated phone using their abilities from Ericsson.
What makes this rumour more credible is the fact the source of this particular information has come from The Nikkie Business Daily, a respectable publication that is rarely incorrect.
According to Nikkei, Sony plans to set up a development team as early as this July to create the iPhone competitor. Many of Sony's staple developers — Capcom Co Ltd and Square Enix Holdings for example — have started creating games for the iPod/iPhone line so this possible move by the company would make a great deal of sense.
The rumour is not one rich in detail, but it's noteworthy because Nikkei is the source. The world still lacks a competitor for the iPhone that intends to compete with its gaming abilities, so if the rumour is true, it would seem Sony is trying to pull from its gaming expertise to create a strong competitor in a new area of business.
