article imageAir France Flight 447: Officials Rule No Black Box Signals

By M Dee Dubroff     Jun 24, 2009 in Lifestyle
It appears that the search for the black boxes from doomed Air France Flight 447 may never be found. French military ships have detected sounds, but they are not from the flight recorders.
According to news sources, French vessels in the search area have picked up noises from the ocean’s depths on a regular basis since the May 31 crash, but none of them have revealed any connection to the missing flight recorders. The black boxes will only continue to emit signals for another week and the more time that elapses, the slimmer the chances of recovery become.
The two recorders hold the answers to what caused the horrific crash that claimed the lives of 228 passengers. In the words of French military spokesman Christophe Prazuck:
As the Associated Press reports:
"The black boxes have not been found. Regularly we have alerts. They hear noises that could be related so they have to investigate these noises, but the French authorities have never had confirmation that any of the sounds detected were related to the black boxes.”
The Brazilian navy has conducted the search and recovery efforts for bodies and debris, but the French are in charge of investigating the causes of the crash and the hunt for the black boxes. It is known that the Airbus A330 plane came down in the Atlantic after running into thunderstorms en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, but why it went down remains to be seen.
The quest for the black boxes has become international with help from Brazil, France, the United States and other countries whose ships are methodically scanning the Atlantic Ocean for any signs of the plane.
Eleven of 50 bodies recovered from the flight have been identified. According to Interpol, they include: eight Brazilians, one with joint Brazilian-German citizenship, one Brazilian-Swiss and a British national. In an attempt to identify other remains, DNA and other material from the bodies is being collated and compared to other data in a central Interpol database.
The mystery surrounding the tragic demise of AF 447 may never be solved but final acceptance of this fact will never come for want of trying.
