A possible attempt to kill former president Jimmy Carter has been foiled on a trip to Gaza. A car bomb was found along the route that Carter was taking. Carter was in Gaza to give a graduation speech for UN-run schools.
Hamas security found the explosives buried in the sand. No one was hurt and it is not clear if Carter was the intended target of the bomb.
Carter said that the Gazans are treated more like animals than humans during a graduation speech for the United Nations-run schools in Gaza City. He criticized the Gaza blockade imposed by both Israel and Egypt.
Carter is not traveling as a representative of the United States. As a private citizen he will still report back to President Obama about his visit to the region.
MSNBC reports:
I have to hold back tears when I see the deliberate destruction that has been wreaked against your people," he said. Noting that many Israeli weapons are built in and provided by the United States, he added, "I feel partially responsible for this, as must all Americans and all Israelis."
