article imageOp-Ed: Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather, Jr. match will be major draw

By Leo Reyes     Jun 15, 2009 in Sports
The Pacquiao-Mayweather match remains unbeatable even as Cotto proves his worth with his unpopular win over Joshua Clottey. Top Rank's Bob Arum has been pushing for a Pacquiao-Cotto match but boxing fans may not agree with him this time.
With the unpopular win by Miguel Cotto over Ghanaian boxer Joshua Clottey, a Pacquiao-Cotto match may not draw huge crowd that will deliver the level of revenues that the promoters expect in a fight.
Bob Arum has been telling boxing fans around the world that a Pacquiao-Cotto match up is a sure crowd drawer as he talked about the huge crowd from Puerto Rico and New York for another grand show at the Madison Square Garden.
The poor showing of Arum’s favorite fighter could derail the match up that the Top Rank’s honcho has been talking about even before the Pacquiao-de la Hoya match.
Boxing fans are saying that the Pacquiao-Cotto match is going to be a boring fight that the crowd will not enjoy. Cotto is a slow foot fighter in contrast with Pacquiao’s speedy trademark. There is also a possibility that Pacquiao will out-punch Cotto with his power and speed, even considering Cotto’s superior physical advantages.
New York Post reports that Arum's preference for a Pacquiao-Cotto match up on Nov. 14 is fairly obvious and self-serving. Top Rank promotes both fighters, meaning it would have full promotional control of the bout and put itself in a virtual no-lose situation. But ultimately it will be Pacquiao's decision to select from a list of potential opponents that includes Cotto, Shane Mosley, and the victor between Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez, a fight that has been postponed because of a rib injury Mayweather suffered in training camp. No new date has been set.
The Filipino boxing superstar was seated beside Bob Arum at the ringside of the Madison Square Garden during the Cotto-Cottley fight. The pound-for-pound king could be telling his promoter that the proposed match up may not buy the tickets that will generate the desired revenues.
Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach has been pushing for a Pacquiao-Mayweather match. The ‘Trainer of the Year’ awardee believes that the Pacquiao-Mayweather match will be the ultimate fight of the year and boxing fans will just love the match up.

Mayweather has been playing hard to get with his demand for a 60-40 sharing of the purse in his favor which statement Arum said was absurd, citing Mayweather’s diminished popularity because of his 19-month retirement period.
A few days ago, Mayweather was reported to have been injured in his on-going training in preparation for his bout with Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18 in Las Vegas. The injury could lead to a possible rescheduling of the fight.
Because of the crowd and pay-per-view drawing power of the two great boxers, boxing fans from around the world believe that the Pacquiao-Mayweather, Jr. match-up remains unbeatable at this time.
