Clarcon Biological Chemistry Laboratory has issued a voluntary recall of their hand sanitizers and skin protectants due to findings by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA issued a warning about hand sanitizers developed by Clarcon Biological Chemistry Laboratory Inc. of Roy, Utah.
After inspection by the FDA the products were found to contain high levels of disease-causing bacteria.
Several samples of the over the counter topical antimicrobial skin sanitizer and hand protectant products were analyzed and they revealed high levels of various bacteria. Some included an association with unsanitary conditions.
There is risk of infection to the skin and also to the underlying tissues. These risks have the potential of causing serious infections that may require medical or surgical attention and/or may result in permanent damage.
A big concern of the FDA is the products are promoted as antimicrobial agents that claim to treat open wounds, damaged skin, and protect against various infectious diseases.
The FDA advises the products should not be used and to throw them away in the household refuse.
Consumers of these types of products should verify the ethanol content of their hand sanitation products. They also need to heed the any FDA warnings and instructions.
According to studies 62 percent ethanol is superior to 40 percent. The discount brands may only have 40 percent ethanol and some may not display the level of the ethanol. According to examiner.com, "In one study overseen by the CDC, it was found that a discount product with 40 percent ethanol actually increased bacterial concentration while claiming to reduce "germs and harmful bacteria" by 99.9%.”
The product is marketed under several brand names which include,
• Citrushield Lotion
• Dermasentials DermaBarrier
• Dermassentials by Clarcon Antimicrobial Hand Sanitizer
• Iron Fist Barrier Hand Treatment
• Skin Shield Restaurant
• Skin Shield Industrial
• Skin Shield Beauty Salon Lotion
• Total Skin Care Beauty
• Total Skin Care Work
The warning is not to use any products by Clarcon.
