A gunman has opened fire at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. Wednesday morning. The gunman is in custody at this time.
There are reports that three people have been injured as a result of an attack at the
Holocaust Museum in Washington.
BNO News reports:
"All I can confirm at this time is that around 10 minutes to 1, MPD responded to sounds of gunshots around the Holocaust Museum," a spokeswoman said. She said at least two people had been injured in the shooting but could not say if the shooter was among them. According to media reports, a third person was also injured from flying glass. There was no immediate word on their conditions.
Reports say that a gunman walked into the museum just before 1 p.m. Wednesday. The gunman opened fire on a guard. The shooter has been shot and is in police custody.
U.S. Park Police are giving a slightly different story, saying that three have been shot.
The museum's security is generally very tight. All visitors have to pass through metal detectors at the entrance.
Children at the museum on a field trip had to be evacuated when shots were heard.
None of those with the field trip had witnessed the shooting.
Reports from the
National Post say that a police officer was shot outside of the museum.
It is now being said that the third victim was hit not by a bullet but by flying glass, and two people have been taken to hospital.
The museum has about 1.7 million visitors a year.
Update: The
shooter has been identified as an 87-year-old white supremacist.
Both the security guard and the shooter have been listed as being in serious condition at George Washington University Hospital.
CBS News has said that the man is James Von Brunn. That has not been confirmed by officials.
