The Royal Canadian Mint has called in the RCMP, saying that it cannot account for the 'missing' precious metals valued at millions of dollars.
The
RCMP said that they are reviewing the situation at the Canadian Mint to see if there are "sufficient grounds to investigate." The value of the missing metals is over $10 million, causing the federal government to ask questions. The audit, ongoing since March, is expected to be finalized this week, but the police probe was ordered
yesterday by Rob Merrifield, the Minister of State for Transport. His department is responsible for the Mint. He
told the House of Commons that the auditors would "not be able to reconcile" the difference, referring to the possibility that the metals are 'missing' due to human error in record keeping.
The news about the 'missing' precious metals has been causing speculation since it first broke earlier this month.
