Within a week after it's launch, the new search engine from Microsoft Bing surpassed Yahoo to become the No. 2 search engine in the World. However it remains to be seen whether Bing can sustain the sudden surge in traffic.
According to the data published by the web monitoring firm StatCounter for search market share on June 4, Bing managed to get 16.8% share of search engine traffic from the U.S while Yahoo who remained at its average market share posted 10.22%. Google remained at the number one spot with a share of 71.47%. Globally also, Bing narrowly overtook Yahoo with 5.62% and 5.13% market share respectively. Google retained its top position with a whopping market share of 87.62%.
However it remains to be seen whether the spike in interest in Bing is temporary or not. Microsoft is spending $80 million to $100 million in ad campaigns promoting the new search engine. Also many people may be trying out how the new search engine from Microsoft looks like ? Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter said
It remains to be seen if Bing falls away after the initial novelty and promotion but at first sight it looks like Microsoft is on to a winner.
Techcrunch reports,
Are people just test-driving Bing en masse, or does this have anything to do with the fact Bing is forced upon IE6 users? Or is it just because it’s that good and the advertising is already working? Either way, the jump Bing appears to have made since launching merely a couple of days ago is significant, and the drop you see in Google’s share even more so..Are we witnessing the birth of the first true Google challenger or is this nothing but launch momentum bound to fade away
Bing, which was launched on May 28 has since received some pretty positive responses from many users and tech blogs. Microsoft calls it as a decision engine rather than a search engine.
