People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA, wants to make the public aware of the cruelty of fishing. They wish to take possession of a lighthouse in Michigan.
Grand Haven, Mich.---- Sarah King, director of PETA sent a letter to Dan Wenk, acting director of the National Park Service, notifying him of the group's planned bid to take over the Grand Haven South Pierhead Inner and Entrance Lighthouses.
Under the National Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000 lighthouses are available to nonprofit organizations or other eligible entities at no cost.
The two lighthouses would become their national headquarters for its Fish Empathy Project. They would have educational displays to prove that fish are intelligent animals that feel pain like birds and mammals do.
According to PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman, "For years, lighthouses have helped protect those at sea, so it seems appropriate that they would be used to protect sea life too. The more that people learn about how intelligent and sensitive fish are, the less likely they'll be to stick a fork or a hook in them."
Each one of the lighthouses would have a cafe where delicious faux-fish sticks would be served. They would also serve other fish friendly foods.

According to Grand Rapid News the center will have a 300-square-foot quilt to pay tribute to the billions of of fish that are needlessly killed for their flesh or are abused by anglers, PETA said.
PETA has been unsuccessful in their attempt at obtaining other lighthouses.
